Cultural Competency

Statue of Liverty

“Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.”

Emma Lazarus probably never realized how true those words would be…how many culturally diverse populations would pass the threshold to freedom and opportunity. But, along with the excitement of a new home, comes the anxiety, the fear, the loneliness, the loss of one’s comfort zone.

One way to break through the language barrier is by trying to be culturally sensitive. While it is impossible to know all cultural nuances, most people understand kindness, an open door and a soft voice.

Cultural diversity is not just about immigrants and refugees.

It also involves race, color, ethnicity, religion, age, gender, and lifestyle. It’s about recognizing how diversity can make us better and stronger as a group.

Highlander Communications offers Cultural Sensitivity workshops. Every workshop is customized for your group’s specific needs. Among the sessions available are: recognizing my cultural uniqueness, let’s “walk in their shoes,” how I relate with the culturally diverse population, our culturally diverse community, the specifics of cultural diversity, working in the multicultural world, multicultural problem-solving and conflict resolution, the needs of specific groups, communicating with multicultural groups and avoiding the pitfalls.

The above modules will be modified once we meet with you and determine your needs. The workshop will be high energy, and will include interactive activities, panel discussions with culture groups, surveys, practice modules, scenarios, question/answer, small and large group sessions.
